Every link has a score that is derived from users' promotions or demotions of the link. Each user can only vote once (either positivly or negativly) for a link. Voting trains a filter for each user so that Reddit can personally recommended links. Reddit allows nested comments to be left on links. Comments can also be promoted and demoted by users. Users of Reddit are called redditors.
