In former times one of its ingredients was the root of the marsh mallow, a shrubby herb from which it takes its name.
Besides just eating them by themselves, many people, children and adults alike, enjoy eating marshmallows in a variety of ways. Some prefer their hot cocoa with marshmallows. In Thanksgiving, marshmallows are often placed on top of sweet potatoes. By far, the most popular places to find marshmallows are in rice crispy treats and in s'mores. Rice crispy treats are a puffed white cereal cooked in melted marshmallows, which produces a crunchy, sweet bar. Smore's are traditionally made by cooking a marshmallow over an open fire, especially when camping, and then placing it with chocolate and between graham crackers.
