He played for several clubs including Derby County. He made an initial name in management at Oxford United and then made a great success of an opportunity to become assistant manager under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
In the summer of 2001 McClaren was offered the position of manager of Middlesbrough and has been a success in the role, taking them into European football for the first time and overseeing the recruitment of many big-name international footballers to the club. He also has pushed the team to reach their highest finish in the Premiership, 7th in the 2004/2005 season which gave them another run in Europe. Many expect to see him managing the England national team in future.
McClaren is also assistant manager and chief coach to the England football team.
