Also the name of the westernmost canton of Switzerland, surrounded on almost all sides by France and centered around the city of Geneva. The city of Geneva is the seat of many international organizations, and was the seat of the League of Nations until its dissolution. In the 16th century it was the center of Calvinism.
Current population of the city of Geneva: 176,000, of which 43.4% foreign.
Current population of the canton of Geneva: 414,300, of which 37.6% foreign.
