The film was originally launched in 2006, titled Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam then, with a photo shoot being held for Karthi Sivakumar and Sandhya, however since then, the film failed to take off and Selvaraghavan and Karthi did the film Aayirathil Oruvan in place of it. The film, back then, had Arvind Krishna as the cinematographer and Yuvan Shankar Raja as the music director.
The film restarted on November 7, 2008 when a photo shoot with Dhanush and Andrea Jeremiah was held. Following his split with his original technical team, Ramji and G. V. Prakash Kumar had taken over the responsibilities of being the cinematographer and music director respectively. However, the film was shelved again for unknown reasons as Selvaraghavan continued with the same team with Aayirathil Oruvan.
Shoots began again on 27 June 2010 with the same cast, becoming the second time the shelved film was relaunched, which was then titled as Maruvan. In the month of july a part of the movie was shot at Jeppiaar Engineering College, chennai. The film is now renamed as Erandam Ulagam, with Yuvan Shankar Raja being the music director again. However, in a sensational turn, Prakash Kumar was assigned again after Yuvan Shankar Raja backed out as he couldn't give priority to the project due to his prior commitments and since Selvaraghavan was in a rush to complete the film to start his next film Vishwaroopam. The director has decided to kick-start the final schedule of the shooting in the first week of April.
