Martial races were thought to possess qualities like courage, loyalty, self-sufficiency, physical strength and resilience, orderliness and hard work, and fighting tenacity. The British recruited heavily from these Martial Races for service in the colonial military. Some of the peoples designated by the British as belonging to a martial race are the Gurkhas, Rajputs, Sikhs, Jats, Pashtuns (Pathans), Marathas, Mahars, and Kodavas.
