A doughnut is a deep-fried piece of dough or batter. The two most common shapes are the flattened sphere, which is filled with jam (UK) or jelly (US) or another sweet paste; and the ring, which was traditionally formed by wrapping the dough around a stick. Both types are usually rolled in sugar after cooking, resulting in a confection that is extremely high in carbohydrates.

The cartoon character Homer Simpson is especially fond of doughnuts.
