Little was known about his early years, except that he was born and raised in Australia. He was appointed a Judge of the High Court of Hong Kong in 1979 and a Justice of the Court of Appeal in 1987. He was later appointed Vice-President of the Court of Appeal in 1995 and as such served as acting Chief Justice in 1996-1997 during the Hong Kong handover period.
