A certain Marco, "provveditore" of the Navy commanded by the "doge" Domenico Michiel († 1130), to the Holy Land in 1121, reconquered from the "barbarians" the flag ("vessillo") of St. Marck. For this he was called "Barbaro" (barbarian).
