In Joseph Wright of Derby 's An Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump from 1768, a small audience of genteel men, women and children observe a scientific demonstration with a mixture of interest and revulsion. In the 18th century, science was primarily the realm of amateur gentlemen and such demonstrations were a popular social activity.
