A school shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Sandy Hook village, Newtown, Connecticut occurred on December 14, 2012. The death toll has been reported to be as high as 27 people killed, including 18 children. Three people are reported to be in critical condition and have been transported to hospitals. If this death toll is confirmed, this would be the second-deadliest US civilian shooting (after 32 people died at Virginia Tech in 2007).
Shooting
The principal and school psychologist were reported among the dead. The gunman, who wore black combat garb and a military vest, had been cursing over the school public address system, and went from room to room shooting children and teachers. The elementary school has close to 700 students.
Authorities recovered a Glock and SIG Sauer 9mm handgun, but it was unclear who killed the shooter.
Suspect
The 24 year-old male perpetrator has been confirmed deceased by the Connecticut police. A second man is being questioned by investigators though it appears this suspect may have not been involved.
CNN has identified the shooter as Ryan J. Lanza from Hoboken, New Jersey. The perpetrator reportedly lived in Hoboken, New Jersey and was the father of a student at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. His mother was a teacher at the school.
Police have found another body at a home in Hoboken, New Jersey connected to the shooter. CBS News reports that the shooters mother was a teacher at the school.
Response
President Barack Obama was informed of the shooting at 10:30 am EST in the Oval Office by John O. Brennan.
