My work

I often contribute to Misplaced Pages in a public relations capacity, primarily through Talk pages. If a COI is not disclosed, I do not have one. I've supported the creation of Request Edit templates, WikiProject Cooperation and several custom templates and essays related to COI.

2

I also edit primarily on public relations and marketing topics, articles on organizations and doing chops and AfDs on articles that mention "industry-leading" or "turnkey," etc.

Position on COI

We can improve the behavior of organizations and individuals on Misplaced Pages by making it in their best interest to act in the manner we prefer. Ethics will be a more attractive option for article subjects when we provide clear instructions, reasonable processes and an effective approach. Creating greater risks, better methods of detection and stronger deletion can discourage spam, advertising and censorship by reducing the ROI of those strategies. It is not scalable nor consistent to expect companies to be ethical, rather than expecting them to pursue their own best-interest and modifying their behavior on that basis.

A few other things:

  • Because PRs are agnostic to Misplaced Pages's success or failure, there is no AGF/ABF, only different approaches, corporate bureaucracies and levels of competence to "doing their job."
  • Saying "COI editing is discouraged" isn't helpful, since it would be irresponsible for PRs not to serve their employer's interests in a lawful and ethical way.
  • If a PR person served Misplaced Pages's interests and their client's simultaneously, this would be a conflict of interest and would be unethical. We serve our client's interests exclusively. When the BrightLine is followed, the best way for us to serve our clients is by providing value to Misplaced Pages and its readers.

Privacy

Many editors in the Misplaced Pages community may have met me in-person, by phone, or otherwise know who I am. There are few areas I will edit that don't offer some remote opportunity for real-world consequences. I ask that you respect my privacy, so that I may edit in controversial areas without fear of real-world consequences. Thank you.

Do you have a COI?

I am willing to donate my volunteer-time on Misplaced Pages to:

  1. Correct problems that are both genuine and important when my attention is drawn to them
  2. Add content to Misplaced Pages that makes the article "better" in a clear and obvious way
  3. Provide feedback
  4. Sometimes write content when a COI editor provides a contribution of substantial value

I am not willing to:

  1. Consider proposed rewordings of material that is already neutral and properly sourced
  2. Debate with a PR person in areas where volunteer editors may reasonably disagree
  3. Collaborate with a PR person that is not providing clear and obvious value

Thanks for trimming down the Association of Flight Attendants article. The article had been so plagued with COI/promotional editing and coatracking that I gave up on it months ago. —KuyaBriBri 05:21, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Awarded for your COI submissions board. I have long thought that there should be an equivalent to WP:BLPN for companies. I hope the board will flourish, and become a Misplaced Pages noticeboard in due course. Andreas JN466 23:33, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
