Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati, IITG) is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute of higher education established by the Government of India, located in Guwahati, in the state of Assam in India. It is the sixth Indian Institute of Technology established in India. IITG is officially recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. At present the Institute has 11 Academic Departments, 3 Inter-Disciplinary Academic Centres and 4 Centralised Service Center covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Design, Master of Arts, Master of Design, Master of Technology, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programmes. IIT Guwahati has world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.
History
The history of IIT Guwahati traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord signed between the All Assam Students Union and the Government of India, which mentions the general improvement in education facilities in Assam and specifically the setting up of an IIT. The Indian Institute of Technology- Assam Society was formed in 1989. The foundation stone was laid in July, 1992 in Guwahati. Indian Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act 1994, passed by the Parliament of India, was notified in Gazette of India on May 26, 1994 by which the The IIT Guwahati- Assam Society was made into IIT Guwahati. By the Gazette of Indian notification of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India) dates September 1, 1994 the Central Government of India declared September 1, 1994 as the date on which the Indian Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act 1994 (No. 35 of 1994) came into force and IIT Guwahati was established. The enrollment of students started in 1995. The selection process was the same as that of all IITs, i.e., through the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE). In 1998, the first batch of students were accepted into the Master of Technology program through the GATE.
Campus and geography
The campus of IITG is on the northern banks of Brahmaputra and abuts the North Guwahati town of Amingaon, pincode-781039.Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati campus is on a sprawling 700 acres (2.8 km) plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city.

Internationally, IIT Guwahati was ranked 551–600 in the QS World University Rankings of 2011 and 89 in the QS Asian University Rankings of 2012. In India, among engineering colleges, it ranked 10 by India Today in 2012, 8 by Outlook India in 2012 and 7 by Dataquest in 2011. In the Mint Government Colleges survey of 2009 it ranked 6. The Chemical Engineering Department was ranked 101-150 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2012.

Annual festivals
Every year the students and administration of IIT Guwahati together organize and number of festivals and competitions. Techniche, Alcheringa, Reflux and IIT-Guwahati Entrepreneurship Summit are the conducted on a very large scale and are growing in terms of participation and sponsors.
Techniche, The Annual Techno-Management Festival
Techniche was started in 1999 in the Technology complex of IIT Guwahati, starting in two rooms and growing to over 15,000 participants from colleges and schools all across India, UAE and Singapore. Techniche has played host to Nobel laureates, leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs like Richard Stallman, Kiran Karnik, Prabhu Chawla, Nathan Schulhof, Dr. John C. Mather, Jeff Lieberman, Mike Fincke, Kiran Bedi, Dr. Raghuram Krishnapuram, Yashavant Kanetkar, Pranav Mistry, Mark Toorock etc. Techniche is a non-profit organization run by the student community of IIT Guwahati and promotes the development and honing of scientific and entrepreneurial skills in the academia and at the same time being socially responsible with its initiatives towards education amongst the underprivileged through its module 'We care'. Techniche is relatively very young in comparison to the other major college techno-management festivals of India,yet it has established itself amongst the biggest festivals of India in a very short period of time. The symbol of Techniche are two pixelated saplings, orange and blue in colour. The saplings are the portrayal of how Techniche integrates the 'youth' from all around the country and effects red the blue colour stands for the management face of Techniche while the orange represents the technological front of techniche.
Alcheringa, The Annual Cultural Festival
Alcheringa is the annual cultural festival of the IITG. It is held for 4 nights and 3 days generally on the first weekend of February. Started in 1996 by a bunch of IITG students, Alcheringa has a footfall of more than 50,000 and a participation from 350 colleges from across the country. It is a student-run non-profit organization which caters primarily to the youth of the country. It consists of competitions, informal events, workshops and showcases professional performances. Alcheringa boasts of performances by the stalwarts of the entertainment industry, from India and abroad. In the past, Alcheringa has featured performances from performers including Mohit Chauhan,Chitresh Das, Sonu Niigaam, Shaan, Strings, KK, Euphoria, Indian Ocean, Parikrama, The Raghu Dixit Project, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Anoushka Shankar, Kalki Koechlin, Isha Sharvani, Vir Das, Advaita, Motherjane and RDB. Alcheringa has also hosted foreign acts like the Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie, Irish Rock band Frantic Jack, Israeli progressive metal band Orphaned Land, and Italian Embassy’s sponsored tour of Giuliano Modarelli.
Alfaaz, The Annual Literary Festival
Alfaaz is the annual literary festival of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), Guwahati, India. The word Alfaaz means words in Persian language and accordingly consists of literary competitions, panel discussions, lectures, demonstrations, video conferences and workshops. The festival is traditionally held over two days and three nights during March, and attracts participants from all over India. Alfaaz is the biggest literary festival of North East India and is also the biggest, scale wise, when compared to any engineering institute in India. It provides collegiate students with a platform to showcase their literary talents and raise social issues, especially, social issues of the North Eastern regions of India.
Udgam, The IIT Guwahati Entrepreneurship Summit
The IIT Guwahati Entrepreneurship Summit (IES) is conducted by the Entrepreneurial Development Cell (EDC), IIT Guwahati to inspire young students in North-East India to become Entrepreneurs. It is held annually as a 3 day summit in March. Apart from a series of talks by eminent speakers there are a host of workshops & networking sessions.
Reflux, The Annual Chemical Engineering Festival
Reflux is the annual Chemical Engineering festival organised by Chemical Engineering Department of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. It aims to involve the students of the Chemical Engineering and also from closely related fields of Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry and Biotechnology. Reflux which is a unique of its kind welcomes everyone envisaging various learning events and competition and promoting a spirit of Chemical Engineering.The festival aims at bringing forth some of the most fascinating and mind-blogging phenomena related to Chemical Engineering through a series of Workshops, Lecture Series, Competitions and On-The-Spot events. The theme for 2013 was Cleaner Energy, Greener Tomorrow, to promote the use of cleaner sources of energy so as to have an all-round sustainable development .

Besides these, Inter-IIT Sports Meet is held annually every winter among the Indian Institutes of Technology. The Meet is hosted by any one of the older IITs (Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, Roorkee) in round robin fashion. IIT Guwahati hosted the 42nd and 49th Inter-IIT Sports Meet.
