Production
Development
On August 2, 2014, it was reported that Paul Feig is in talks to direct a reboot of the franchise, featuring women in the lead roles. On September 17, Aykroyd told The Hollywood Reporter that he wants to do a Ghostbusters-style universe in line with what Marvel has done with its own shared universe. On October 8, The Hollywood Reporter announced that screenwriter Katie Dippold and director Paul Feig would be writing the script. Feig also confirmed that it would not follow the last two films and would be a completely different from the original films, and it would be a total reboot of franchise with all female leads. On January 15, 2015, when talking with Empire, Feig revealed that the film would be shot and set in New York City. In February 2015, Feig revealed that he was inspired by The Walking Dead, how they play with the danger, and he said Ghostbusters is inspired by The Walking Dead too.
Casting
On September 7, 2014, original Ghostbusters star Bill Murray was asked at 2014 TIFF by Toronto Star whether he was in favor of the female-Ghostbusters reboot or not, and Murray said, "I’m fine with it, I would go to that movie, and they'd probably have better outfits, too." He also even suggested his fan casting for the film, which included Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini and Emma Stone. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were also rumored to be casting in the film. On October 13, it was announced that Gillian Anderson wanted to play one of the female leads as she said, "Paul Feig, cast me now!" On October 14, it was revealed that original Ghostbusters star Murray might get a cameo or supporting role in the all-female lead film. On December 10, comedian Rebel Wilson visited Today, where she was asked about a role in Ghostbusters, on which she said, "I have had a meeting, I would even do that without the money truck. I'd do that for free."
On January 9, 2015, THR reported that Melissa McCarthy was in early talks to join the film, but her deal might not be done due to her scheduling conflicts with a TV show Mike & Molly and a film Michelle Darnell. Jillian Bell and Cecily Strong were both in eyes for the key roles in the film. On January 27, director Feig tweeted a photo of his lead cast for the Ghostbusters reboot, which included Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, while some sources said they were still in talks. In February 2015, Feig revealed that he and screenwriter Dippold had written a key role for Cecily Strong and they wanted her in the film. In March 2015, talking to Digital Spy, Sigourney Weaver revealed that she had offered to play a role to Paul Feig, on which he said, "We'd love to have you in it" but after Weaver told him she wanted the role of Slimer, he said, "he didn't think that would work out."
On June 8, 2015, Chris Hemsworth joined the cast as the team's receptionist, the male version of Annie Potts’ Janine Melnitz from original films.
Filming
Filming was set to shoot in New York City. Some portion of the film would also be shot in Boston, Massachusetts in Spring. Later in March 2015, it was confirmed that sets were being constructed in Boston for the shoot to begin on June 18, 2015, tentatively.
Principal photography on the film began on June 18, 2015 in Boston.
No one cares anyway since this movie will be an instant flop at the box office, Paul Feig has admitted he does not care about ruining people's childhoods with this sorry excuse of a remake of a classic franchise. Paul Feig is a selfish homosexual asshole.
Release
Columbia Pictures will release the film in the United States on July 22, 2016.
