That revolt was put down, and Spartacus executed, by Marcus Licinius Crassus. Spartacus was a native of Thrace, a region to the north-east of mainland Greece long considered especially barbaric by the Greeks.
The historical novel Spartacus by Howard Fast was made into the film Spartacus by Stanley Kubrick in 1960. It starred Kirk Douglas in the title role and was re-released in 1967 and again in 1991, with "restored" scenes that had been cut for being too racy in 1960.
