Maroun al-Ras is strategically important as it overlooks the Israeli village of Avivim, about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) away. The village's elevation is 911 meters (2,988 feet).

The village was occupied by Israel after they said it was a stronghold for Hezbollah and one of the launching points for rocket attacks on northern Israel.

Six Israeli soldiers were killed in the village, though Israel says it drove Hezbollah out.
