The term is also used for types of artillery with long barrels that fire at a relatively flat trajectory. The term gun is often used as a synonym to firearm, but technically only refers to smoothbore firearms and naval artillery, with rifles not being called a gun.
Most guns are designed to kill people or animals, with a minority being designed for sporting purposes.
