Main Page appearance: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

This is a note to let the main editors of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on June 21, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at present, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/June 21, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

The Beatles

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by the English rock band the Beatles (pictured). Released on 1 June 1967, it was an immediate commercial and critical success. After the group retired from touring, Paul McCartney had an idea for a song involving an Edwardian era military band, and this developed into a plan to release an entire album as a performance by the fictional Sgt. Pepper band. Knowing they would not have to perform the tracks live, the Beatles adopted an experimental approach to composition, writing songs such as "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "A Day in the Life". The producer George Martin's innovative recording of the album included the liberal application of signal processing. The cover, depicting the band in front of a collage of celebrities and historical figures, was designed by the English pop artists Peter Blake and Jann Haworth. One of the best-selling albums of all time, Sgt. Pepper is regarded as an important work of British psychedelia and an early concept album. One music scholar has described it as "the most important and influential rock and roll album ever recorded". (Full article...)

You (and your talk-page stalkers) may also be interested to hear that there have been some changes at the TFA requests page recently. Nominators no longer need to calculate how many "points" an article has, the instructions have been simplified, and there's a new nomination system using templates based on those used for DYK suggestions. Hi Dan56. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Misplaced Pages:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Maxinquaye

Dan56, I've added some more reviews from the UK press – feel free to edit or delete as you wish. I'm not happy about the position of the 2009 reviews, for instance: I think they're better off going in the ratings table, but there's no room for them there... just out of interest, are you opposed to the use of two tables, for contemporary and legacy reviews?

Two other things: the reception section states that the album was record of the year in "numerous" English publications... well, apart from NME and Melody Maker (where it was joint first, actually), I can't find any other publications where it was the outright winner, so perhaps that word "numerous" needs to go. Also, do you not see "Hell Is Around the Corner" as the album's fifth single? Obviously it wasn't in its original form and formed part of a remix EP, but I still think it's a single from the album, nevertheless. I also have dates for all the single releases, if you want them added in. Richard3120 (talk) 20:28, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

@Richard3120:, great addition of those contemporary reviews! I think the deluxe edition reviews don't add much that hasn't already been said earlier in the section ("the album was unique", "sui generis", etc., albeit in different mealy-mouthed phrases and declarations of praise)... I don't want to have too many quotes reiterating the same things (WP:QUOTEFARM). I revised and rearranged both. Let me know what you think. Q(('}}s 5-stars are represented in the ratings template already, but I would like to substitute Mojo for The Observer. Judging by the Misplaced Pages articles on those two, I'm given the impression Mojo is/was a more notable publication. I changed "numerous" to "several". What are your sources for the single dates? Dan56 (talk) 09:57, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
No problem, I just wanted to make you aware I'd made the changes – I tried to keep them in the style of what had already been written, but I agree with you, I found it difficult to find a suitable place in the text for the 2009 reviews... and yes, there's only so many times you can quote a critic going "it's great" about an album.
Mojo is a monthly music magazine that tends to focus on legacy material, i.e. most of its reviews are about new records from classic artists (Bob Dylan, Neil Young... you get the picture) and reissues of classic records from the past, while the articles tend to be retrospectives about a classic single, album or even tour... very useful for finding material if you're working on records from past decades, particularly rock – the magazine aims at an older readership who aren't really into electronic or dance music. The Observer is the Sunday edition of The Guardian, the UK's main (only?) left-leaning broadsheet newspaper. Nothing wrong with The Observer/The Guardian at all: many of their music critics over the last ten or fifteen years – Jude Rogers, Kitty Empire, Dorian Lynskey, Garry Mulholland, Tim Jonze, and indeed Jon Savage – all started their careers as staff writers for NME or Melody Maker. But I personally think a review from a music magazine carries more weight than a newspaper critic... maybe that's just personal preference.
The release dates for the six singles all come from the weekly "new releases" section of Music Week, which I'm sure you know is the UK's equivalent trade paper to Billboard in the US. They all match up with a UK singles chart entry date of 12 days later according to the OCC database (released on Monday, they would have entered the chart dated w/e the following Saturday), so I am confident that these dates are correct.
There's a couple of other things to add to the article, but they won't change the text that much: sources for the NME and Melody Maker year-end critics' list which placed Maxinquaye at no. 1, and the Rolling Stone critics' list for 1995 which placed the album at no. 3. Also, I found a quote in another Tricky interview about "Suffocated Love", where he says he wanted a song where Martina played "the cruel woman, the bitch" because he likes "playing the weak role... the person who's used" – it seemed an interesting quote in the context of their musical and personal relationships.
Then by all means, those single dates should be worked into the sentence where the months are already mentioned. NME and Melody Maker's are already sourced, so I don't see it as necessary, but definitely Rolling Stone and sure, that quote would be interesting to add. Dan56 (talk) 05:29, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
Next week I will try and do the same thing and add UK reviews to The Stone Roses. Hope you can get The Ecstatic to FA by the way: I know it didn't chart in the UK but it has its British fans, including me, who agree that it was Mos Def's best album since his debut. Richard3120 (talk) 15:44, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

FAC voluntary mentoring scheme

During a recent lengthy discussion on the WP:FAC talkpage, several ideas were put forward as to how this procedure could be improved, particularly in making it more user-friendly towards first-time nominees. The promotion rate for first-timers at FAC is depressingly low – around 16 percent – which is a cause for concern. To help remedy this, Mike Christie and I, with the co-operation of the FAC coordinators, have devised a voluntary mentoring scheme, in which newcomers will guided by more experienced editors through the stages of preparation and submission of their articles. The general format of the scheme is explained in more detail on Misplaced Pages: Mentoring for FAC, which also includes a list of editors who have indicated that they are prepared to act as mentors.

Would you be prepared to take on this role occasionally? If so, please add your name to the list. By doing so you incur no obligation; it will be entirely for you to decide how often and on which articles you want to act in this capacity. We anticipate that the scheme will have a trial run for a few months before we appraise its effectiveness. Your participation will be most welcome. Brianboulton (talk) 17:04, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

Possibly, just because of the difficulty in searching an eponymous album title, but I think the section as it is captures the gist of how the record was received. Dan56 (talk) 19:21, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi Dan, here's another one of your FAC nominations at TFA, I'm working on the TFA text now. - Dank (push to talk) 15:39, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

Done, I hope. I had to move some things around to deal with the much shorter space, and to conform a bit more with the ordering in past TFA columns; I think there's some value in the concept of a "column", something that people can get used to reading, something that aims for consistency. My edits are of course no reflection on your lead, which is beautifully worded, I think. - Dank (push to talk) 21:50, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
I've made some minor changes, but I think your column flows quite nicely @Dank:. I was surprised this article would be picked for TFA this fast. So thanks :) Dan56 (talk) 00:24, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Composition sections

Hi -- I don't think we've interacted much, except perhaps at FAC. I'm looking for a second opinion on a music article that I'm trying to help with. If you have time, would you mind taking a look at Talk:Make Me Like You, at the discussion about sections on composition and lyrics? The article has failed at FAC a couple of times, and I'm hoping that working with the nominator away from FAC will improve it to the point where it will pass, and might also give them a better idea of what to do with their next article. The issue is whether a section on the composition and lyrics of a song is required, and how directly the sources need to address those points to be usable. Thanks for any help. (And any TPSs with an interest would be welcome to chip in too.) Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 23:04, 22 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi, @Mike Christie:. I don't think I'd have the time at the moment to delve adequately into that article, nor am I an expert on song articles; I've only worked on a few in any substantial capacity. My opinion would be that a featured article should be comprehensive on all information available in the literature on the topic. If there isn't anything in the sources about a song's composition and lyrics, then it seems unfair to hold that against the nomination. Usually reviews of a work (album, song, etc.) will have some discussion of this information, but since it's critical opinion, that information seems as if it would be touched upon in a reception section. I don't think a section titled "composition and lyrics" (and the like) should be made mandatory simply because it seems to appear elsewhere on Misplaced Pages. It's really a matter of allocating information IMO. Good luck! Dan56 (talk) 12:36, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, that's very helpful. Thinking of it in terms of how to allocate the information that is sourced, rather than filling required sections, seems like a good approach to me. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 13:39, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
