"Stereotype of the Jew"
Following Lee Jussim we can assume that most stereotypes are statistically rather correct and that they are kept overt the times just therefore. So Alecsandri was hardly the inventor of a successful stereotype, but the other way round his depictions of Jews were succesful because they matched the common experiences. For an even-handed debate of Jews and Jewish behaviour in Romania we can profitably read the chapter in "Esau's tears" by Albert Lindeman, an admirable work of Jewish self-criticism.
