Jens Beutel (July 12, 1946 in Lünen – May 8, 2019) was a German politician and a member of the Social Democratic Party and served as lord mayor of Mainz beginning in 1997.
Career
Beutel studied law at the University of Mainz from 1968-1976 and then served as a judge in Frankenthal, Koblenz and Mainz. He began his political career as Ortsbeirat in the suburb Mombach in 1974. Beutel was elected to the city parliament in 1989, and became chairman of the SPD group in 1995.
Beutel was elected as Oberbürgermeister (lord mayor) in 1997, the first who was elected directly by the citizens. During his time as lord mayor, a new shopping passage, a new stadium and the new synagogue Mainz were built. He was for many years president of the Städtetag Rheinland-Pfalz [de], and of the International Gutenberg-Gesellschaft [de] (Gutenberg Society). He was active in the Council of European Municipalities and Regions and in several foundations in Mainz. He resigned in 2011.
Beutel died on 8 May 2019 at age 72.
Chess
Beutel started playing chess at age 13 and managed to attract the Chess Classic tournament to Mainz. In 2002, he lost a computer-assisted handicap match against chess champion Viswanathan Anand.
Legacy
Beutel's successor Michael Ebling (SPD) credited Beutel as a man of balance and dialogue ("Mann des Ausgleichs und des Dialogs") and a committed team player, who always emphasized the community in the city ("als engagierten Teamplayer, der stets das Gemeinschaftliche in unserer Stadt betonte").
