The Shiloh Shepherd is a variety of the German Shepherd bred in the United States, it was developed to correct behavioural and conformational issues that have been bred into modern German Shepherds.
Overview
The Shiloh Shepherd was created in the 1970s and 1980s as an "improved German Shepherd" by an American dog breeder, Tina Barber, to rectify nervousness she had observed in the latter. The Shiloh Shepherd was bred from line breeding four German Shepherd bitches, it was bred for large size, length of their back, temperament and soundness of hips. An inherited condition of degenerative joint disease causing spinal cord compression has been detected in the breed, it has been suggested this has been caused due to breeders selecting dogs for their extreme body type.
The Shiloh Shepherd is not recognized as a breed by any major kennel clubs, but has been recognized by the American Rare Breed Association since 1991.
