He played right field, left field, and first base.
Shamsky tied a major league record by homering in 4 consecutive at-bats for the Reds on August 12 and 14 of 1966. He finished the year with 21 HR and 47 RBIs in only 234 at-bats.
Shamsky hit .300 as a fourth outfielder and lefthanded pinch-hitter for the 1969 World Champion Mets. His .538 batting average and seven hits led all batters in the 1969 LCS.
Nagging back problems hastened Shamsky's departure from the game in 1972.
In the American sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, Ray and Robert's childhood dog was named Shamsky Number 1, after the player.

Art played with Pete Rose, Lee May, Daron Johnson, Mel Queen, Teo Acosta, Ted Davidson and others in Macon Ga on the AA Peaches. Peaches won more games than any other team in the 1960 SALLY League but did not win the AA penant.
