Ćmielów Porcelain Factory (Template:Lang-pl) is the oldest and one of the largest porcelain factories in Poland, also described as "likely the most recognizable national porcelain brand". The company traces its history to the craft manufactories established in the Polish town of Ćmielów in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

History

The company traces its history to the craft manufactory established in the Polish town of Ćmielów in the year 1790. Another milestone was the creation of a larger manufactory in 1804 by count Jacek Małachowski. The production of porcelain started in 1838 (before that time, the local pottery production was mostly of simpler types, such as faience). The manufactory changed owners several time, in 1921 becoming a S.A.-type corporation. In 1924 the company acquired a smaller factory in nearby Chodzież. The company was nationalized by the communists in 1946. Half a decade later, in 1997, the company was privatized and as of mid-2010s was split between two owners (Polskie Fabryki Porcelany „Ćmielów” i „Chodzież” SA and Fabryki Porcelany AS).

In 1946, workers at the factory staged a strike in protest against a three month long shortage of flour.

Designs

The Empire design by B. Wysocki and J. Steckiewicz was created in the 1930s on the order of Polish President Ignacy Mościcki for the Royal Castle, Warsaw. The design is used in official settings throughout the world, including in the President of the Republic of Poland’s registrar’s office.

During the 1950s and 1960s the factory produced the figurki ćmielowskie figurines which were examplary in technology and form.
