It tells about people's lives in Russia under President Vladimir Putin. The book examines areas such as military funding as well as the conduct of the war in Chechnya.

The book begins with criticism towards handling the Beslan crisis. Accounts of individual people who suffered from the Moscow theater attack are then given. The author then moves to explaining about war criminals, notably Yuri Budanov. His case is explained in detail. The author then moves to Ural region, where the oligarch Pavel Fedulev has a notable position. Finally she tells about the poor life of navy soldier is Kamsatka.
