Kabaroi) were a confederation of three Khazar tribes that rebelled against the authority of the Khazar khagan in the 9th century. The word itself is believed to derive from a Turkic word meaning "rebel."
The Kabars joined the proto-Magyar migration from the steppes of the Ukraine to the Danubian Steppes of modern Hungary, assisting the Magyars in conquering Pannonia. Many Kabars settled in the Bihar region of Transylvania. It is thought that the early Hungarian lord Marot, prince of Bihar, and his grandson Menumarot were of Kabar descent.
The Kabars eventually assimilated into the general Magyar population, leaving scattered remains and some cultural and linuistic imprints. Some scholars believe that the Szekely are their descendents.
