Bardhaman is a district in West Bengal. Burdwan is an alternative name for the district which remains in use from the British period.

Burdwan is the most resourceful district in West Bengal both industrially and agriculturally. The eastern part is enriched by the alluvial soil of river Bhaghirathi (minor stream of river Ganga) is one of most strong agricultural region in Bengal. The Western part is rich in coal. Durgapur steel plant is on this side. Other smaller steel plants are also there. Some power plants are situated in this region.
