He was killed on the Shankill Road, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Background
Begley was born in the nationalist Ardoyne area of north Belfast. In January 1993, Begley joined the PIRA.
Paramilitary career
Begley was killed when a bomb he planted under a UDA meeting room which exploded prematurely killing himself and nine civilians. Forensic evidence pointed to Begley holding the five pound bomb above the refrigerated serving counter at the fish shop when it exploded. Sean Kelly, who was the other IRA Volunteer in the shop at the time was convicted of murder his connection in the Shankill Road bombing.
Funeral
The funeral of Begley caused some controversy when the Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams was heavily criticised for carrying Begley's coffin.
