Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami is the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, the leading Islamic movement in Bangladesh, and Industries Minister of the Government of Bangladesh. A very brilliant student, a highly revered Islamic scholar and a high profile politician and parliamentarian, Nizami is considered one of the most successful ministers of the present government.

Education: He was born in Sathia Upazilla under Pabna District in March 31, 1943. He completed his primary education in his own village. Then he studied in Boalmari Madrasa of Sathia. He was a very meritorious student from the very beginning. He passed Dakhil exam in 1955 from Boalmari Madrasa with very brilliant result. In 1959, he passed Aleem exam securing 16th position in the combined merit list of erstwhile Pakistan Madrasa Education Board. He passed the Fazil exam in 1961 and Kamil in 1963 securing second position in erstwhile East Pakistan Madrasa Board. He received higher degree from Dhaka University in 1967.

Student Politics: Maulana Nizami started his political life in 1954. He joined Islami Chhatra Shangha, the leading Islamic student movement of that time, in 1961. He was elected President of the organisation for 1966-67, 1967-68, 1968-69, 1969-70 and 1970-71 sessions.

Career: Nizami started his career in Islamic Research Academy in Dhaka in 1971. He became involved in journalism at one stage. He worked as a translator for few years. However he became so engaged in Islamic movement that he could not continue his career.

In National Politics: He entered the national politics in September 30, 1971 by joining Jamaat-e-Islami He became the Ameer of the Dhaka city unit of the organisation within a short period of time.

He was a member of the Executive Council of Jamaat-e-Islami from 1979 to 1982. We worked as an Assistant Secretary General from 1983 to 1988. In 1989, he was elected the Secretary General of the organisation. He performed as the Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami till 2001 when he became the Ameer of the party.

He was elected a member of the Parliament in 1991 from Sathia constituency of Pabna District. He was again elected with huge number of votes from the same constituency in 2001. He was able to draw the attention and adoration of even his political opponents in the Parliament.

Nizami has commendable contribution to the movements for democracy in 1969 and 1990. He was one of the leading politicians of the 'Caretaker Government' movement which was the brainchild of Jamaat-e-Islami.

As A Minister: Nizami became the Agriculture Minister of the Government of Bangladesh in 2001. He is considered one of the most successful and most honest ministers of the present government. As the Agriculture Minister he had worked hard to improve the agricultural production of the country as well as to alleviate the life standards of the farmers. He frequently visited the farmers to know their problems so that he can solve them in the soonest possible time. During his tenure, agricultural production of Bangladesh raised remarkably and its contribution to the GDP growth increased significantly.

Considering his success in Ministry of Agriculture, he had been given the charge of Ministry of Industries, a very important but sick ministry to, in the words of the Prime Minister, "invigorate the Industries Ministry".
