Corporate Stupidity

The recent decision by the WMF to "hide" IP addresses is probably the absolutely most asinine and stupid decision the Foundation has ever made in its 20-year history. Rather than simply require registration, as every other well-trafficked internet website does, the Foundation's decision will make fighting vandals and trolls even more difficult. I did not join Misplaced Pages for that reason, yet a large percentage of my daily time is taken up with that task. Last year, Portuguese Misplaced Pages required registration, and all indicators show it to be a very good decision. Vandalism has decreased across the board there, and editors are reporting that they are much happier, and have much more time to spend on improving the encyclopedia. Editor registration has even increased. But rather than follow their example, the Foundation instead dug in its heels, and is implementing IP masking instead. Please understand: One of the primary reasons I oppose IP editing is due to the lack of privacy, but masking IP addressed is not the solution. Mandatory registration will not only protect privacy, but allow an even playing field for all users, which does not exist today.

Because of the Foundation's decision, I am seriously considering retirement from Misplaced Pages. It's just not worth the grief anymore. As I said, I'm not here to fight vandals and trolls, especially unpaid; I'm here to build encyclopedia. If English Misplaced Pages ever implements mandatory registration, I plan to return. Until then, I don't think I'll be here much longer. I'm willing to see what happens first, but I don't expect the results to be good.

(If I were fluent in Portuguese, I'd be editing there instead, at least until the Foundation forces them to allow IP editing again, which will probably happen sooner or later. However, unlike many editors on English Misplaced Pages, I recognize my lack of fluency in other languages, and so I chose not to inflict my language incompetence on other Wikipedias. In truth, I have enough trouble with English sometimes!)

Miscellaneous comments

  • I'm not an idiot, but I sometimes play one on Misplaced Pages!

And Now, Something Completely Different

My Observations on Pets

  • Cats really don't have nine lives, but they eat enough food for nine lifetimes.
  • Many people think cats are cleanly animals. They are not! They are grooming animals - there's a big difference!
  • Sometimes when your pet is whining for no apparent reason, they just want you to go outside and turn the sun on, or the rain off.

Options for a new username

  1. User:I registered on Misplaced Pages, and all I got was this lousy username.
  2. User:I'm a sockpuppet of User:BilCat, but you'll never figure that out! (This is joke, as should be obvious. I've never operated sock accounts, and never will.)
