Nguyễn Minh Triết (born October 8, 1942 in Bến Cát district, Bình Dương province) is the President of Vietnam. He was elected by the National Assembly of Vietnam with 464 votes (94.12%) on June 27, 2006. He was formerly the head of the Communist Party of Vietnam in Hồ Chí Minh City.

The presidency of Vietnam is a ceremonial position and the Prime Minister oversees the daily workings of the government, while the most powerful position is the General Secretary of the Communist Party (currently Nông Đức Mạnh).

After teaching Mathematics in Saigon, Triết joined the Party in 1965. In 1992, he was appointed party chief of southern Song Be province. He guided the largely agricultural province into an attractive place for foreign investment.

He ascended to the Politburo in 1997 and became Party head of Ho Chi Minh City in 2000. In that position he oversaw a campaign against organized crime and corruption, including the arrest and execution of underworld kingpin Truong Van Cam, known as Nam Cam.

Azerbaijani President İlham Aliyev congratulated Triết, “I am confident that friendship and cooperation once established between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam will be further developed and expanded in line with interests of our two nations."
