Note that while both these terms at once are applicable to some artists, this is not always true. For example, many indie hip hop artists produce music that would be described as "gangsta rap" and some alternative hip hop artists have had the backing of major record labels.

Semantically, once an artist or a body of music has reached a certain level of popularity, the term "underground" becomes a misnomer even if one or both of the above categories are still applicable.
