Von Kerpen came from a poor Rhenish knightly family residing in the castle of Kerpen near Gillesheim. While Grand Master, he strove to make the Teutonic Knights independent from the older military orders of the Knights Templars and the Knights Hospitaller.
Von Kerpen died in 1208 and was buried in Acre.
