It has about 1600 members. The seat of the association is Kassel (Hesse).
The society was founded in 1946, after a predecessor institution had already existed. It is concerned with issues of music history, ethnomusicology, and systematic musicology. The society also promotes musicological research in dialogue with other disciplines. In addition, it sees itself as an organ of communication of findings from the field of music to the public.
The society publishes the scholarly journal Die Musikforschung with Bärenreiter-Verlag and also cooperates with the publishers Breitkopf & Härtel, Henle, Laaber, Georg Olms, and Schott.
A scientific conference with symposia, lectures and events of the specialist groups is organized every year; every four years as the "International Congress of the German Musicological Society".
The German Musicological Society (GfM) is involved in the specialized information infrastructures musiconn - Für vernetzte Musikwissenschaft (previously: ViFa Musik, 2011-2020) and NFDI4Culture.
