Noteworthy performances include Eddie in Fool For Love, Kovacs in Olympia (Soulpepper); Man and Destiny, The Front Page, The Silver King (Shaw Festival — six seasons); King Oedipus, King Lear (Stratford Festival); Macbeth (Manitoba Theatre Centre); Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Grand Theatre); Romeo and Juliet (Toronto Free Theatre); A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Crucible (Citadel Theatre); Othello (National Arts Centre); Romeo and Juliet (Perth Theatre, Scotland); Dangerous Liaisons (Neptune Theatre).
He has received two Dora Awards for the roles of Billy in The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, and The Man in On the Verge (Tarragon Theatre).
Hughes is engaged to fellow actor Megan Follows. He lives with Follows and her two children, Lyla and Russel, part of the year in Los Angeles and part of the year in Toronto.
