The mountain is in the Karakorum range, and is denoted as K2 from a surveyors notation that was the first western reference to the mountain.
The mountain is 8,611 m (28,251 ft) high, making it the second highest peak in the world, after Mount Everest. It has the reputation of being particularly difficult to climb.
