• 2004 - Islamist terrorists involved in the 11 March 2004 Madrid attacks are trapped by the police in their apartment and kill themselves.
• 2007 - An official new world record for conventional-train speed of 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph) is set by a French TGV on the LGV Est high speed line east of Paris. (Japan's magnetically levitated train, or maglev train, which hit 581 km/h (361 mph) in 2003, holds the ultimate train speed record.)
