The School of Built Environment at Massey University, Auckland - New Zealand, is a renowned academic academic group dedicated to teaching and research focusing on the advancement of the built environment and construction industry towards zero carbon emissions. The school was established in 2019. Prof Monty Sutrisna has been the head of the school since 2019. Since 2019, Prof Suzanne Wilkinson and Prof Regan Potangaroa have joined the school from the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington.
Today, this school has over 30 academic staff members with expertise in Construction, Architecture, and Engineering and over 200 postgraduate students (over 60 of them are PhD students). As such, it is the biggest construction team in New Zealand. The school is ranked among the top 150 schools in Architecture and Built Environment according to the 2024 QS ranking. This school offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs focused on the fields of construction, quantity surveying, project management, sustainability, digital built environment , and facilities management. The curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the dynamic and evolving industries related to the built environment. Emphasizing a blend of theoretical learning and practical experience, the school prepares its graduates for successful careers in construction management, project management, and related disciplines.
Research Groups and Laboratories
The school includes severl research groups covering different aspects of the built envrinment research from Digitalization to Construction Law. The school has four research labs base in the Albany campus of Massey University:
- Lighting Lab led by Susan Mander;
- Digital Built Environment Lab led by Dr Daneil Paes;
- Indoor Air Quality Lab led by Dr Michael Boulic ;
- Material Lab led by Dr Mohamed Elkharboutly.
