Will Borger of Shacknews gave the PC version of Dustborn 8 out of 10, saying "It is rare for a game to be about something and it's special because of it. It doesn’t always work, but what it gets wrong pales in comparison to what it does right".

Nicola Armondi of Multiplayer.it [Wikidata] gave the PC version of Dustborn 7.5 out of 10.

Gabriele Barducci of Italian The Games Machine gave the PC version of Dustborn 8 out of 10, considering it a "very strange game": praising its "narrative and graphic adventure component", but criticizing "some fighting sessions that are really bad and you wonder why they included them".

Mark Delaney of GameSpot gave the PC version of Dustborn 5 out of 10, noting "a story already soaked in metaphors--some better than others--positively drowns in them"; those being "so far off the rails that its thoughtful early chapters feel written by entirely different human beings".

Michael Leri of Game Rant (part of Screen Rant) gave the PC version of Dustborn 2 out of 5, criticizing its "terribly paced narrative" and the "woefully simplistic" combat that "lacks the necessary smooth controls".

Audra Bowling of RPGFan [Wikidata] gave the PC version of Dustborn: 84 for graphics, 82 for sound, 81 for gameplay, 80 for control, 85 for story; 82 overall score, noting that it has "a lot going for it, especially if you’re a fan of choice-heavy narrative adventures with a core cast of likable characters who develop a genuine and touching found family dynamic as they travel" and criticizing its "limiting combat component".

Carli Velocci of GamesRadar+ gave the PC version of Dustborn 3 out of 5: "Combined with its oddly sustained length, the sheer amount of topics and issues it wants to address, and its growing cast of colorful LGBTQ+ characters, it almost lives up to its promise as an epic, political road trip saga about people with superpowers". She praises "engaging combat and rhythm game elements", "deep, easy to understand choice-making system", and "colorful cast of characters and solid worldbuilding", but criticizes the story writing being of varying quality, as well as the ending and the overall message undermining itself.

Jordan Biordi of CGMagazine gave the PC version of Dustborn 7.5 out of 10, saying that this game "has solid ideas and phenomenal presentation but fails to do any of its many things well enough to be truly memorable".

Malindy Hetfeld writing for The Guardian gave the PC version of Dustborn 3 out of 5. Hetfeld noted the difficult balance as the game attempts "to alternate between fun moments, activism and drama – a balance it ultimately can't hit." Hetfeld enjoyed the game most when it "leans into the silliness of its supernatural storyline" calling it "the equivalent of an interactive Marvel movie, and that is OK."

Ravi Sinha of GamingBolt [Wikidata] gave the PC version of Dustborn 7 out of 10, with the final verdict being "good": "Haphazard at times and calmly cacophonic at others - Dustborn has much going on, and it's far from harmonious. Nevertheless, the characters and intriguing setting help sustain interest".

Giancarlo Saldana of GamePressure.com (part of GRYOnline.pl) gave the PC version of Dustborn 8.5 out of 10, criticizing its combat system, but praising "variety of fun elements focused on opening up to the people around you that truly helps the game blossom into a powerful experience".

Rachel Weber of IGN gave the PS5 version of Dustborn 7 out 10: "Dustborn brings angst to a comic book caper about an alternate-reality America, and you'll get an emotional ride with a few exciting punk performances if you stick with it through a slow start".

David Rodríguez of HobbyConsolas gave the PS5 version of Dustborn 82 out of 100:

Rob Gordon of Screen Rant gave the PS5 version of Dustborn 2.5 out of 5 stars, saying that it's "a bit of a missed opportunity, as underneath it all is a story and game world that begs to be properly realized". Matt of DigitallyDownloaded.net wrote:

I admire a game that is willing to take a risk, and certainly trolling the people who believe that games should be mindless content that doesn’t challenge their intelligence with a "political idea," is a creative risk I can admire. But beyond the initial amusement that I took from knowing that somewhere out there someone is absolutely fuming about this game on a forum or in a tweet, there's actually very little intelligence in Dustborn. It’s also an experience that is so culturally specific that it probably shouldn't have been a global release.
