History

In 1562, the Kabardian prince Temryuk Idarovich undertook a campaign of conquest against the Ingush living on the plain. Detachments of Nogai Murz arrived to help him. Russian Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible, married to Temryuk's daughter Maria, sent 1,000 Cossacks under the command of Grigory Pleshcheyev to help him. As a result of this combined Kabardino-Nogai-Cossack campaign, 164 settlements were defeated on the plain, judging by the Russian chronicles. The Ingush have gone back to the mountains. Kabardians settled in their former territory. The monuments left by the Kabardians are numerous low burial mounds.
