Brad R. Fulton is an American sociologist, who is currently an Associate Professor in the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. He co-authored the award-winning book, A Shared Future, which examines religion and politics in a pluralistic society. As a public scholar, Fulton has served as a fellow with the Aspen Institute, an academic research partner with GivingTuesday, and an instructor with the Leadership Fellows Program at Trinity Church Wall Street. He also hosts the top-ranked statistics podcast Statistics Made Simple.

Fulton received the President’s Award for Nonprofit Research from the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action and the Charity Navigator Dugan Research Award for Philanthropic Impact. He also received a Trustees Teaching Award from Indiana University and an Excellence Award from Alteryx. Sally Kornbluth (then Provost of Duke University) recognized Fulton’s excellence of character and humanitarian service with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award.

Education

Fulton earned a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering & Operations Research from U.C. Berkeley and an A.M. degree in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. In 2015, he earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from Duke University and received the Vorsanger-Smith Scholar Award recognizing his overall excellence in the program. For his doctoral dissertation, Fulton conducted a national study of community organizing to examine the social, political, and economic impact of grassroots activism. His dissertation received recognition and awards from academic associations spanning six disciplines including sociology, political science, psychology, management, communication, and religion.

Career

Fulton became an Assistant Professor in the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University in 2015. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2020. Fulton has served as a consulting editor for the American Journal of Sociology and an editorial board member for Sociology of Religion and Social Service Review.

Research

Fulton directs Project 990––a study of the U.S. nonprofit sector analyzing IRS Form 990 data on over one million nonprofits and 10 million grants to understand the sources and distribution of philanthropic funding in the sector. He is the principal investigator for the National Study of Community Organizing—a multi-level study that examines the causes and consequences of racial, socioeconomic, and religious diversity within grassroots advocacy organizations. Fulton co-directs the National Study of Congregations’ Economic Practices—a multimethod study that analyzes how religious congregations receive, manage, and spend their financial resources. He co-leads the Observing Civic Engagement Lab—a field-based lab that uses an innovative data collection technique, known as systematic social observation, to analyze the internal dynamics of organizations.

Fulton’s publications have been recognized with international awards from the American Sociological Association, American Political Science Association, Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, National Communication Association, and ARNOVA.
