The Japanese Proof Set, commonly known as the Proof Set in the United States, is a set of proof coins sold by the Japan Mint. These sets were first issued in 1987 (Shōwa 62) as "regular proof sets" consisting of denominations of 500, 100, 50, 10, 5, and 1 yen (666 yen total). The Japan Mint started to produce special proof commemorative sets in 1997 when the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line opened.
