Odej Kao


Odej Kao (born July 17, 1971, in Skopje, North Macedonia) is a German computer scientist specializing in distributed operating systems, cloud computing, and big data analytics. He currently serves as a full professor at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), where he leads the Distributed Operating Systems research group.

Education

Kao's academic journey began at TU Clausthal, where he earned a Master's degree in Computer Science in 1995, followed by a Ph.D. in 1997, and completed his habilitation in 2002.

Professional Contributions

In 2002, he joined the University of Paderborn as an associate professor and director of the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing. In 2006, he transitioned to TU Berlin, focusing his research on cloud computing, resource management, quality of service, anomaly detection, and big data analytics. Kao is now the chairman of the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF), an interdisciplinary initiative addressing aspects of digitalization. He also serves as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of TU Berlin and is a principal investigator in the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD).

Kao has authored over 350 peer-reviewed papers. His research interests encompass AI for IT operations (AIOps), cloud computing, distributed systems, and big data analytics with his publications being cited over 6,900 times. Kao leads as chairman of the German Research Network (DFN) and is involved in national and international research initiatives. Kao has been recognized for his exceptional contributions to computer science and academia with the DAAD Award for Exceptional Academic Achievement in 1995 granted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
