Effects
The fire forced evacuations of thousands of people, burning homes and shutting off power. The fire caused the mandatory evacuation of the Pacific Palisades, a rich costal neighborhood in downtown Los Angeles with the median home price being 3.1 Million dollars. The neighborhood is home to around 24,000 people. Around 10,000 homes were affected by the fire.
More than 13,000 buildings and 26,000 people were in the evacuation zone, which has been labeled "under immediate threat," according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. And over 250 LAFD firefighters were battling the blaze, in addition to firefighters from nearby cities. Around 30 vehicles were left abandoned on Sunset and Palisades and were moved by the county to provide clear access, the fire department said.
The other fire vehicles being used include 46 fire engines, three trucks, five helicopters, four brush patrols, two water tenders, six paramedic ambulances, one fast response vehicle, one advanced nurse practitioner unit, and two bulldozers said LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley.
No injuries or fatalities have been confirmed, authorities said.
The National Weather Service said that this could be the strongest windstorm in Santa Ana in more than a decade. Beginning in the afternoon across Los Angeles and Ventura counties and peaking in the early in Wednesday, when the gusts could reach 80 mph. Isolated gusts could top 100 mph in mountains and foothills.
The wildfire caused US President Joe Biden to cancel his plans to travel to Coachella Valley in Riverside County, where he was going to announce the establishment of two new national monuments. One being near Joshua Tree National Park and another in Northern California. Biden will announce this in Los Angeles instead.
