He serves as the Associate Vice-President for External Engagement at the University of Surrey and holds the Chair of Business Analytics at the Surrey Business School.
Xiong was born on April 7, 1981, in China. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Chongqing University. He later pursued his doctoral studies in Computing Engineering at Nottingham Trent University, UK, where he obtained his PhD. Additionally, he earned a Postgraduate Teaching Certificate in Higher Education from Queen’s University Belfast, UK.
Career
Prof. Xiong’s academic and professional career spans multiple prestigious institutions and roles. He began as an EPSRC Research Fellow at the University of York, where he contributed to cutting-edge operational systems. From 2009 to 2012, he served as a Lecturer in the Management School at Queen’s University Belfast. At the University of East Anglia (2012–2015), he was an Associate Professor and Associate Director of External Engagement for the Norwich Business School.
From 2015 to 2020, Prof. Xiong joined Northumbria University as a Chair Professor and took different roles such as Director of Enterprise Engagement, Faculty Lead for Knowledge Exchange, and Head of the Supply Chain Management Group. In these roles, he spearheaded initiatives to advance supply chain innovation and foster collaboration between academia and industry
During his tenure at the University of Surrey (2020–present), he has held several key leadership positions, including Associate Dean International (2020–2022), Founding Director of the Surrey Centre for Innovation and Commercialization, and Founding Director of the Surrey Academy for Blockchain and Metaverse Applications.
In sustainability, Prof. Xiong has been instrumental in initiatives such as the Low Carbon Innovation Fund, valued at £50 million. He has collaborated with UNESCO on Sustainable Development Goals and served as a trustee of the Magna Carta World Peace and Sustainability Foundation. His leadership of the London Fashion Fund, funded by the Mayor’s Office of London, highlights his commitment to sustainable fashion startups. His work was featured by the BBC during COP26 in 2021 and showcased again at COP28 in collaboration with Therme Group and Cop 29.
