Background

Olly first participated in Eurovision Song Contest 2024 to represent the United Kingdom, finishing in 18th place on 11 May 2024 scoring 46 jury points (13th) but zero points from the public (25th), with his single 'Dizzy' which then wasn't known to be a single for an upcoming album but was later revealed in the track list to the album.

On 9 October 2024, Olly teased in an Instagram post stating "you know it's coming.." which began to drive hints towards the announcement of his debut solo album.

On 10 October 2024, he announced the first lead single 'Cupid's Bow' being released the next day. Upon its release at midnight, Olly announced the upcoming release of his album Polari. He commented on how excited he was to release his first ever album under his own name instead of previously being under his split band's name Years & Years. The music video for the single was released later on 11 October 2024, with being greeted with positive reception.

In a press interview, Olly stated “I’ve always loved songs that play with hidden meanings, symbols and subtext,”. “Many queer people will understand a penchant for secrets and codes, having had a backlog of thousands of years where we were unable to live openly.”

In the language of Polari, Alexander said he found a guiding light: “Here was a story that spans centuries, filled with hidden meanings and forbidden love.”

On 22 November 2024, Olly released the title track, 'Polari' which became the promotional track itself being named after the album. The single also had a music video accompanied to it, creating the visuals and theme of the entire album based around the 16th century European slang Polari, which was originated by people who were LGBTQ+ at the time.

On 28 November 2024, Olly announced his collaboration with vinyl company Blood Records to promote his 500 limited copy pressing of his album. Which became the third vinyl variant of the album.

A few weeks later on 13 December 2024, he then released the third lead single titled 'Archangel' which was solely produced by Danny Harle.

On 10 January 2024, Olly then released the fourth lead single off his upcoming album Polari, titled 'When We Kiss' which was accompanied by a music video the very same day. In an interview with Dork Magazine Olly described the song as "an epic love song that delves into the emotional turbulence of a pivotal moment in a relationship when you're unsure whether to part ways or commit to staying together forever." Co-written and produced with Danny L Harle, the song is designed to take listeners on a rapturous and emotional journey, transitioning between anguish, euphoria, and everything in between.
