Mashed Potatoes is a compilation of 77 Smashing Pumpkins songs, compiled in 5 separate CDs by Billy Corgan, with the intention of gifting it to friends and family for Christmas 1994, sending around 10 copies. The CD sets were never officially commercially released, although they were later widely distributed by bootleg releases. D'arcy Wretzky's copy was apparently stolen in February 1995 from her vacation home in Michigan City, Indiana. The robber had sold the stolen copy to a record store, although it was later recovered by police. The collection of songs don't appear to have an intentional organisation and they are largely unedited, with tracks varying from rare demos from 1988, unique songs and jams, to interviews and stage humour commenting on the rock scene, ranging from live performances and discarded songs from Gish and Siamese Dream. A wide range of rock (primarily alternative) genres can be found, such as recordings of their early Goth-influenced songs such as "Jennifer Ever", "Bleed" and "My Eternity", to Shoegaze-inspired tracks such as "Honeyspider" and "Stars Fall In", to the alternative rock sound the band is famously known for, including outtakes and alternate versions of Siamese Dream and Gish songs, to live covers of other artists' songs.
All of the CDs are covered by white paper and handwritten notes and tracklists written by Corgan, noting the date of the songs as well. The CDs were stamped with the logo of the Chicago Recording Company. In December 2002, eight years after its release, the entire set of CDs were published online on MP3 format. It is believed that they were likely published by Corgan himself, shortly after the disband of his previous band Zwan.
Tracklists
Majority of the songs listed were never officially released, which also contributed to an incomplete/unknown list of writers. However, just like majority of Smashing Pumpkins songs, they were likely written by Billy Corgan and/or James Iha. 10 of the tracks are covers. The total duration of the live material lasts 177:27 minutes and studio recordings 114:07 minutes. Many of the studio songs are taken from the 1989 Reel Time Sessions, which were also released on bootleg.
