Rex Gildo (July 2 1939 - October 26 1999), also known as Ludwig Alexander Hirtreiter, was a German singer.
He sang often with German-Danish singer Gitte Haenning, one of their best known songs is "Vom Stadtpark die Laternen".
In 1972 he had a huge hit with a song by Ralph Siegel, "Fiesta Mexicana (Hossa)".
In 1974 Rex Gildo married his cousin Marion Hirtreiter, but lived most time in homosexual relationships.
When Schlager, the music-style he performed, became out of fashion in the 1980s, he had to perform on beer-festivals and at shopping-malls to earn his living. "Fiesta Mexicana" still was his most popular hit and he had to perform it over and over again.
October 23rd 1999 Rex Gildo committed suicide jumping out of a window of his apartment in Munich. He died on October 26th. He was buried next to his longtime companion Fred Miekley († 1988) .
In 2007, "Fiesta Mexicana (Hossa)" was brought into a whole new generation of people when the New York Rangers started playing the song whenever winger Marcel Hossa scored a goal.
