It is available around the world via satellite and it hit the airwaves on December 10, 2005. The broadcast is also available online from the Russia Today TV homepage, russiatoday.ru. (The online service Russia Today is unrelated to the TV channel and can be found at russiatoday.com.)
The goal of Russia Today is to present information about Russia, to give the viewers the opportunity to get acquainted with Russian views on world and domestic events. A major part of Russia Today air time is devoted to Russian and world news but it also airs business and sports news. In addition, Russia Today features documentaries on present-day life in Russia and its history.
In Russia viewers can watch RT as a part of the NTV Plus basic package. In the United Kingdom it is available to Sky Digital viewers.
Similar to Al Jazeera English and France 24, the channel can be perceived as an attempt to provide an alternative to the anglo-american point of view on international news dominated by CNN International and BBC World, however as of December 2006, Russia Today appears to have had a stronger focus on presenting Russian news and viewpoints to a global audience and less ambitions of becoming a truly global channel.
