Beginning

Fall Out Boy, a pop/punk outfit formed in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette is composed of four members, vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Pete Wentz, guitarist Joseph Trohman and drummer Andrew Hurley. The band formed in 2001 when guitarist Joseph Trohman approached friend Pete Wentz (then front man of the band "Arma Angelus") about starting a metal band. Dissatisfied with the metal direction, Trohman and Wentz decided to continue in the direction of pop/punk music influenced by the likes of Descendents, Green Day and Lifetime. Trohman and Wentz then went in search of a vocalist and drummer. It was then they met up with friend Andrew Hurley, drummer for burgeoning political metal-core outfit "Racetraitor". Afterwards Trohman met vocalist Patrick Stump in a Border Books where Strump introduced himself to Trohman.

Album History

In 2001, the band issued a self-released 3-track demo that circulated around Chicago. The band followed that up in May 2002 released a split LP on the Uprising label that featured the Milwaukee band Project Rocket. The LP featured the same songs three songs on the original self-release, with the exception of these being mastered versions. The band followed the split album up with “Fall Out Boy’s Evening With Your Girl” on February 25, 2003, also on the Uprising label. It was after this release that Fall Out Boy found themselves in a bidding war between several labels. Ultimately they settled with the Gainesville, Florida label “Fueled by Ramen” to release their major label debut. However, they received an advance from Island Records that funded the debut, and gave Island a right of first refusal on the next Fall Out Boy album. They recorded their debut, “Take This to Your Grave” in a few weeks at Butch Vig’s Smart Studios in Madison, WI, with producer/friend Sean O’Keefe. On May 6 2003 they released “Take This to Your Grave” The record, along with a video for the song “Grand Theft Autumn/Where is Your Boy” garnered them attention from the punk rock community. The video received play on MTV and MTVU (a version of MTV only available on college campuses). At the end of 2003, Fall Out Boy officially signed with Island Records. They followed “Take This to Your Grave” on May 18, 2004 with the EP “My Heart Will Always Be the B-Side to My Tongue” Not just an EP, it also came packaged with a DVD that contained early footage, videos, and history section where the members of the band discuss how the formed, early touring and recording their debut. Although signed to Island Records, it released on the Fueled By Ramen label. Afterwards, a limited edition Vinyl of “Take This to Your Grave” was released, in addition to the regular album tracks, it also had a special “dance remix” to their hit song “Grand Theft Autumn” The vinyl was limited to one pressing of 500 copies the green camouflage version, and one 500 copy pressing of a black vinyl version. Both versions also came with six giant trading cards. On January 25, 2005, the band released a directors cut version of “Take This to Your Grave.” The director cut has video of the band breaking down each song word by word. It also contains the dance remix of Grand Theft Autumn previously available on vinyl only, and a cover of Roxanne by The Police. The director cut was a limited release of 5000 copies. On May 3, 2005, Fall Out Boy released their major record label debut on Island Records titled “From Under the Cork Tree. The album features 12 new songs, and an electric-guitar version of Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner, which appeared acoustically on the earlier B-side release. Song titles are long and ironic as seen on the previous album. The album is considerably more polished than the earlier releases.”
