The Polizia Municipale (municipal police) is responsible to the local mayor and limited to performing public order duties. Traffic control is their main function in addition to controlling commercial establishments to ensure they open and close according their license.

The Italian Polizia Municipale has 60,000 employees and the force’s vehicles have many different liveries depending on local tastes. The municipal police are also known as the Vigili Urbani which is an old term for local police. In some regions of Italy these forces can also be called Polizia Urbana or Polizia locale.
